Indonesia is also known for its volcanos. Although little known, Kawah Ijen (Ijen Crater, 2350 m) is one of the most spectacular. To get here I took a vehicle and hiked. I stayed overnight with the ranger. Along the way earthmoving equipment was being used to construct a road, a scene straight out of an environment's horror movie! Sulphur mining is big business here. Indonesian Chinese factory owners come in a pickup truck to cart away the haulings of these small but stalwart men who carry the mineral up and down and then hike back again. It is difficult and poorly paid work.
