One of the best parts of visting Puerto Rico is to explore the numerous small towns. At 1,800 ft., Barranquitas is not only one of the highest towns on the island, but also one of the most beautifully situated. Viewed from the massive volcanic rocks that cradle it, it resembles a Spanish medieval print. The Catholic church towers above houses which seem to have been built right on top of each other. Its chief claim to fame is as the birthplace of Puerto Rican statesman Luis Muñoz Rivera (see "History" under Introduction). At the Museo Biblioteca, in the wooden house where he was born in 1859, a small museum displays letters, pictures, newspaper clippings, a car used in his 1915 funeral procession, furniture and other items. Down the road is the Mauseleo de Don Luis Muñoz Rivera, C. Muñoz Rivera, located next to the tomb where Don Luis (1859–1916) and his son Luis Muñoz (1898–1980) are buried. It documents his funeral vividly with objects and papers relevant to his demise. There are pictures of his life, his works, and bronze casts of his head and hands. Right in front of the entrance is the marble tomb. To the R are their wives. The pensive statue of Amistad, which gazes down at the tomb, is labeled "hoy y siempre," now and always. | ![]() | ||
