Explore Puerto Rico: Photo Essay |

The Cabo Rojo Lighthouse is near Carr. 303, standing along a spit of land between Bahía Salinas and Bahía Sucia. It's a really beautiful trip to get here. Once inhabited by the lighthouse keepers and their families who occupied the two wings at its base, it is has been electrified and is now automatic. This lighthouse was built in 1881 under Spanish rule in response to pressure from local planters. Beneath the lighthouse, jagged limestone cliffs at Punta Jaguey drop sharply into the sea an awesome sight to behold. The whole area has the feeling of being at the end of the world. There are large numbers of brown pelicans sitting on the rocks off the coast; it is a great place for birders.
