We often underestimate the amount of mutualism involved in rainforest interactions. Butterflies pollinate flowers, but the absence of either will lead to an imbalance which will have an unknown effect or effects on the ecosystem. All are bound together in a a "web of life." In our arrogance, an attitude part and parcel of our attitude as a haughty know-it-all primate, we overlook this. The destruction which results is our loss as well. |
