I witnessed this extraordinary performance in Tosari, a small village on the side of Mt. Bromo in East Java. I was the sole outsider at this ritual in which locals flagellate themselves with whips and ride bamboo horses. Participants in this ritual, known as kuda kepang, enter a trance and become possessed by a horse spirit.
