These puppet-like figures are, in effect, the tombstones of the Torajans buried inside. Sulawesi's Torajas traditionally have believed in an animistic religion in which sacrifices were made to the deceased before being entombed in a cliff. These figures guard the outside. In the years since this photo was taken, many have been stolen and sold to collectors.
